In the heart of St. George, Utah, a cherished tradition continues to unite the community. Each year, residents gather to apply a fresh coat of white paint to the massive 'D' emblazoned on Black Hill, a practice that has endured for over a century.
This event, known as the whitewashing of the 'D,' is a highlight of Utah Tech University's D-Week celebrations. The 111th annual whitewashing took place recently, drawing students, alumni, and locals alike.
John Bowler, the university's director of alumni relations, emphasized the event's significance, stating it symbolizes the pioneer spirit and unity of the community. The tradition began in 1915, fostering a sense of belonging and honoring the university's history.
He said that all of the D-week traditions paint a picture, literally and figuratively, of “who we are — resilient, persistent, and forward-thinking.” “The act of painting the D brings people together to remember those who came before us and to build a connection to the past, present and future,” he said.
Bowler noted that the annual painting tradition “has been part of the fabric of this community for generations.”
“Painting the D on the hill dates back 111 years, which is incredible when you think about what it represents,” he said.
Bowler was asked what this particular tradition means to him.
“To me, it symbolizes grit, determination, perseverance and faith — that tomorrow will be better than today,” he said. “It reminds us that progress can be slow, and sometimes even feels like it’s going backward, but it is still progress. The people who first came here had very little, yet they kept moving forward, and that spirit continues today.”
He called this tradition “a powerful experience that reinforces belonging and purpose.”
“When you stand on that hill, watching the sun come up over Zion National Park and look out over the community, you gain a deep appreciation for how much has changed and how much has stayed the same,” he said.
As St. George continues to evolve, traditions like the whitewashing of the 'D' serve as a reminder of the city's rich history and the enduring spirit of its residents. These events not only honor the past but also strengthen the bonds that will guide the community into the future. |
