Intermountain Health St. George Regional Hospital Unveils Legacy Display

Explore Over 100 Years Of Medical History

Intermountain Health St. George Regional Hospital has unveiled a captivating new exhibit that chronicles over a century of medical history in Washington County. The display, located on the hospital's main floor, features an array of artifacts, including a vintage wheelchair, a preserved nursing uniform, and surgical tools, each narrating the evolution of healthcare in the region.

The unveiling ceremony brought together current hospital president Natalie Ashby and her predecessors Mitch Cloward, Terri Kane, and Steve Wilson. Ashby expressed profound gratitude for their contributions, stating, "I stand on the shoulders of giants. I am so thankful for what they did." She acknowledged the unique challenges each faced and the invaluable advice they've shared.

The journey to assemble this collection was both serendipitous and community-driven. Some artifacts were discovered unexpectedly, like a tub of historical items found in a garage. Community members also contributed personal memorabilia, enriching the exhibit. Longtime caregiver Terri Draper spearheaded the effort to collect and preserve these pieces, ensuring they are now accessible to the public.

The hospital's roots trace back to 1913 with the opening of Washington County Hospital. Over the decades, it evolved through various iterations, including its integration into the Intermountain Healthcare system in 1975. Former president Steve Wilson reflected on the community's resilience, noting the challenges faced by early settlers and the progress achieved since.

Today, St. George Regional Hospital stands as a testament to this enduring legacy, serving a rapidly growing community with a comprehensive campus on River Road. The new exhibit, situated alongside plaques honoring previous hospital versions, offers visitors a profound glimpse into the rich tapestry of local medical history.

This initiative not only preserves the past but also inspires future generations to appreciate and build upon the foundations laid by those who came before.
