Sculpture for St. George's New City Hall Embodies a Love Story

Artist Jerry Anderson's latest work honors both personal and historical romances

As St. George's new City Hall nears completion, anticipation builds for a centerpiece that promises to capture hearts: a sculpture by renowned artist Jerry Anderson.

At 90, Anderson reflects on the unwavering support of his wife, Fawn, throughout their 71-year marriage. "Without her, I wouldn't do and be what I do," he shares, acknowledging her role in his artistic journey.

Their love story began when Jerry was 17, and Fawn, a cheerleader, has been his steadfast supporter ever since. Even after a recent stroke, she continues to manage his paperwork, embodying the dedication required to be married to an artist.

Anderson's latest piece draws inspiration from another enduring romance—that of David and Wilhelmina Cannon, pioneers who helped establish St. George in 1861. The sculpture immortalizes the couple's exchange of a sego lily, a flower that later became Utah's state emblem.

Historian Richard Whitehead, who is funding the $115,000 sculpture without public money, recounts how David's discovery of the sego lily convinced Wilhelmina to stay in the challenging new settlement. This tale underscores the resilience and love that shaped the community.

Anderson dedicated six weeks to sculpting David and five weeks to Wilhelmina, using 300 pounds of clay. He emphasizes the importance of honoring pioneers like Wilhelmina, stating, "Every town has a hero, and every hero should be recognized in bronze because it's everlasting." When asked about his personal hero, Anderson's response is heartfelt: "My hero? This girl."

The sculpture is set to be unveiled in January at the new City Hall, serving as a testament to the enduring power of love and commitment that continues to define St. George.
