St. George Explores Second Animal Shelter to Alleviate Overcrowding

City Council to Deliberate on New Facility Amid Rising Pet Population

St. George officials are considering the establishment of a second animal shelter to address the persistent overcrowding at the existing facility.

The City Council is set to discuss this proposal in their upcoming meeting, aiming to enhance the city's capacity to care for its growing pet population.

April Jewell, a representative from the St. George Animal Shelter, emphasized the necessity of this expansion.

"Capacity is an issue," Jewell stated.

"We get pretty full often, and it’s really a lot of work for staff for cleaning and making sure the animals’ health and happiness are taken care of."

The current shelter accommodates approximately 36 dogs and 30 cats, with half being strays and the other half surrendered by owners.

However, the influx often surpasses the outflow, leading to extended waitlists for owners wishing to surrender pets.

Jewell attributes this trend to factors such as population growth and lifestyle changes.

"They’re moving and they are not allowed to have animals," she explained.

"There are times for financial reasons, and there are also times when health reasons come into play."

Local residents, like George and Jonnie Mahron, who recently adopted their third pet, support the initiative.

"There’s never too many shelters. There’s always a lot of pets," Jonnie remarked.

"St. George used to be a very small town, and it is not anymore. It is a very large area, and having locations at different parts of town is very helpful and easier for everybody."

The City Council meeting is scheduled for December 18, 2025, at 61 South Main Street, St. George, UT 84770.

Residents interested in the development of the new shelter are encouraged to attend.

As the city continues to grow, addressing the needs of its animal population remains a priority for St. George officials.

The proposed second shelter represents a significant step toward ensuring the well-being of both pets and residents in the community.
