St. George Seeks $20M From State for Airport Terminal Expansion |
Expansion aimed at relieving congestion and allowing additional flights to serve Southern Utah |
St. George officials are seeking $20 million from the state to support a significant expansion of the St. George Regional Airport terminal.
This initiative aims to alleviate congestion and accommodate the region's rapid growth.
The proposed $100 million project plans to more than double the current 35,000-square-foot terminal.
Enhancements include adding four second-floor gates to the existing three ground-floor gates, along with expanded baggage, security, and ticketing areas.
These improvements are designed to meet increasing passenger demand and attract additional commercial airlines to Southern Utah.
In 2025, the airport served 431,607 passengers, marking a 35% increase from the previous year.
Projections for 2026 estimate between 474,000 and 537,000 passengers.
To fund the expansion, the city plans to contribute $25 million and is seeking the remaining funds through federal grants, Washington County's transient room tax, and potential contributions from SkyWest Airlines.
In August 2025, construction began on a new air traffic control tower, a critical component for managing increased flight operations.
The five-level tower is expected to be operational by June 2027.
These developments underscore St. George's commitment to enhancing its transportation infrastructure to support the region's growth and economic vitality. |
