Utah Introduces Mandatory Annual Boating Safety Course for All Watercraft Operators |
New legislation aims to enhance safety and prevent invasive species spread on Utah's waterways |
Utah has implemented a new law requiring all boaters to complete an annual safety course before operating any watercraft on the state's waters.
This initiative is designed to improve safety and prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources mandates that all individuals launching motorized or non-motorized watercraft—including paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes—must complete the free online Mussel-Aware Boater Course annually.
Upon completion, boaters receive a certificate that must be displayed on the dashboard of their towing vehicle.
Additionally, operators of motorized boats are required to pay an annual Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) vessel enrollment fee.
The fee is $20 for Utah residents and $25 for non-residents, separate from the standard boat registration fee.
After payment, boaters will receive a current-year AIS decal to affix to their vessel.
These measures aim to curb the spread of invasive species like quagga mussels, which pose significant threats to Utah's aquatic ecosystems.
Boaters are also reminded to clean, drain, and dry their watercraft after each use to further prevent contamination.
For more information and to access the Mussel-Aware Boater Course, visit the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources website.
By adhering to these new requirements, boaters contribute to the preservation of Utah's waterways and ensure a safer, more enjoyable experience for all. |
