Trivia Question❓

St George, Utah is known for its unique nickname as the "Hot Spot." This nickname is due to the city's consistently high temperatures and abundance of sunny days. What is the average number of days of sunshine St George receives each year?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

In St. George, Utah, coach Jessica Young has launched Desert Valley Sports, a nonprofit making youth athletics more accessible and affordable in the region.

The organization, deeply rooted in community spirit, connects kids from grades 5-8 with team sports opportunities — especially in volleyball, where Young’s passion shines. Desert Valley Sports partners with high schools and parent volunteers to run inclusive leagues, building skills and teamwork while preparing children for future school sports.

Supported by collaborations like Nets on Fire, the girls’ volleyball league expanded from just 16 to 41 teams in its second year. Boys’ volleyball is also booming; this spring, the league more than doubled in size, engaging even more young athletes.

Volunteer coaches receive free clinics, improving the overall experience and sense of community. By relying on donations, the league keeps participation costs low and is exploring new scholarships and accessible practice spaces.

Desert Valley Sports continues to grow, driven by the vision to help every child play and thrive.

Secret Little Hack

Visit Pioneer Park during sunrise or sunset for stunning views of the red rocks and a peaceful atmosphere without the crowds.

Washington County has become the first in Utah to place two armed guardians at every school, amplifying efforts to protect students.

This decision goes beyond a 2024 law that requires just one armed guardian per building during class time.

The additional oversight highlights the district's dedicated approach to school safety.

Volunteer guardians, who are existing employees such as custodians or cafeteria workers, receive a one-time $500 stipend.

They undergo intensive firearm and safety training, mental health evaluations, and must hold valid concealed firearm permits.

Identities are kept confidential—only administrators and law enforcement are informed.

Many parents welcome the move, expressing trust in the district’s proactive steps.

With other Utah districts still developing plans, Washington County’s bold initiative is seen as a potential statewide model for safeguarding children.
