Construction and road renovations to impact St. George Utah traffic

Residents should expect construction impacts for new road renovations starting this summer

St. George residents should prepare for significant traffic disruptions as major road construction projects commence this summer.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is set to begin two substantial initiatives aimed at enhancing the city's infrastructure.

First, the widening of Interstate 15 (I-15) from St. George Boulevard to Bluff Street will expand the highway from two to three lanes in both directions.

This expansion is designed to accommodate the area's growing traffic demands and improve overall mobility.

Second, renovations on Bluff Street between Main Street and St. George Boulevard will introduce raised medians and additional turn lanes to enhance traffic flow and safety.

These improvements are part of UDOT's ongoing efforts to modernize the city's roadways.

According to Brett Anderson, UDOT's project director, while the capacity of Bluff Street will remain the same, the introduction of smaller lanes may lead to reduced speeds and potential congestion during construction.

Residents should anticipate these impacts throughout the project's duration.

The Bluff Street renovations are expected to take approximately 18 months, while the I-15 widening is projected to last closer to two years.

Construction on Bluff Street is slated to begin in May, with work on I-15 starting around August.

In addition to lane expansions, the I-15 project includes updating undercrossings at 100 South, 700 South, and 900 South, as well as adding noise walls on the east side of the highway and a new connection at 400 East.

These enhancements aim to improve connectivity and reduce noise pollution for nearby neighborhoods.

Local businesses along these corridors have expressed concerns about the potential impact on customer access during construction.

Supe Lillywhite, manager of The Desert Rat, an outdoor sports store situated between Bluff Street and St. George Boulevard, noted that previous construction projects have affected business operations in the area.

To address these concerns, UDOT plans to deploy public involvement teams to ensure effective communication between contractors and the community.

Regular updates will be provided through various channels, including dedicated websites and public meetings.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and plan their commutes accordingly to navigate the upcoming changes.

Staying proactive and informed will help mitigate the inconveniences associated with these essential infrastructure improvements.
