D-Week Tradition Returns to Utah Tech April 6-11

Century-old celebration features The Great Race, Brooks' Birthday Carnival, and iconic D repainting

ST. GEORGE, Utah — One of Utah Tech University's most cherished traditions returns April 6-11, 2026, as students, alumni, and community members come together to celebrate D-Week. This century-old tradition, dating back to 1915, remains a highlight of the spring semester and a vital connection to the university's rich history.

D-Week began as a way to build school spirit and unity among students at what was then Dixie Academy. Over the decades, it has evolved while maintaining its core mission of bringing the campus community together through friendly competition, service, and celebration. Today, it stands as one of the longest-running traditions in Utah higher education.

The week's festivities kick off with The Great Race, a zany competition that pits student organizations against each other in a series of creative and often hilarious challenges. Teams navigate an obstacle course that tests their ingenuity, teamwork, and school spirit. The race has become legendary for its creative costumes, elaborate contraptions, and the enthusiastic crowds that cheer participants along the route.

Another beloved tradition is Brooks' Birthday Carnival, which transforms a portion of campus into a midway of games, food, and entertainment. Named for an influential early figure in the university's history, the carnival raises funds for student scholarships while providing a day of fun for the entire community. Carnival games, rides, and food booths operated by student organizations create a festive atmosphere that draws thousands of attendees.

Perhaps the most iconic moment of D-Week comes with the repainting of the famous D on the hillside overlooking campus. This massive letter, which has marked the university's presence in St. George for generations, receives a fresh coat of paint each year thanks to the efforts of dedicated students who make the hike up the mountain. The annual repainting ensures that the D remains visible from throughout the valley, a symbol of Trailblazer pride.

Throughout the week, students also participate in service projects, talent shows, and competitions that showcase the diverse talents and interests of the Utah Tech student body. Academic departments and student organizations host special events, creating opportunities for connection and community building.

For alumni, D-Week offers a chance to return to campus and reconnect with the traditions that shaped their college experience. Many former students return year after year to participate in the festivities and share their memories with current students, creating an intergenerational bond that strengthens the Utah Tech community.
