Second St. George Costco Opens to Eager Crowds at Desert Color Parkway |
New 154,000-square-foot warehouse brings 260 jobs and expanded retail options to Washington County's rapidly growing community |
Hundreds of shoppers lined up before sunrise as St. George officially opened its second Costco warehouse, a milestone reflecting the rapid population growth and rising retail demand in Washington County.
Located at 4700 S. Desert Color Parkway, the new 154,000-square-foot facility opened its doors following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The store becomes the 15th Costco location in Utah and expands the company presence in one of the fastest-growing regions of the state.
I want to thank Costco for their investment here in Southern Utah, said Shawn Christensen, CEO of the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce. It is absolutely fantastic not to just have one store, but to be opening the second store. Any of you who have been down here, you know the lines are long at the other store, so we are excited for shorter lines, and we are excited to have Costco here.
The inaugural Costco location in the Green Spring area has long experienced heavy traffic and crowded aisles, prompting calls for additional retail capacity to serve the community needs.
St. George Mayor Jim Hughes expressed his enthusiasm for the economic development. This is so exciting for St. George, he said at the ribbon-cutting. I do not know if you all understand how big of a deal this is, that we actually have a second Costco in little old St George, Utah. So we are deeply grateful for Costco and all they do.
Hughes also described Costco as more than just a retail destination for residents. For me, Costco is a social experience as well, he said, adding that the warehouse retailer helps bring residents together. When I come to Costco, I see people from all around the community.
The new warehouse will employ approximately 260 workers, including more than 100 new hires, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
The opening marks another sign of St. George continued growth and development, as the city cements its status as a regional hub for commerce and retail in Southern Utah. |
