Hundreds of Washington County seventh graders got a hands-on look at construction careers during the third annual Careers in Construction Day in St. George.

At Career Tech High School, students explored woodworking, masonry, framing, concrete work, interior design, heating and cooling systems, and heavy equipment operation.

Organized by local homebuilders, the event introduced young people to skilled trades as the industry looks for its next generation of workers.

That need matters to local families: a construction labor shortage can slow homebuilding and add to housing costs.

Students also saw that a four-year degree is not the only path to a career.

Trades education can help teenagers develop practical skills in high school, though no single event guarantees a job.

For St. George, giving students a chance to try the work is a step toward building the workforce that future homes will require.

In St. George, VHS rentals are bringing back the simple pleasure of choosing a movie together.

At Legacy Media Digital, owner McKay Murdock has opened his tape collection to customers who want to browse the shelves, pick up a treat and take a film home.

Parents can share a familiar childhood ritual with their kids, while younger viewers get a break from scrolling through streaming menus.

The store rents VCRs, too, making movie night possible for families without a working player.

Since 2009, Legacy Media Digital has helped Southern Utah customers preserve aging photos, film and home videos through digitization.

Q/A Questions

Q: Why does St. George, Utah have such a mild winter compared to the rest of the state?

A: St. George sits in the Virgin River Valley at a relatively low elevation of around 2,800 feet, tucked into the Mojave Desert's northern edge. The surrounding red rock canyon walls act as a natural heat sink, absorbing warmth during the day and releasing it at night, which keeps temperatures noticeably warmer than cities like Salt Lake City or Provo, even in January.

Q: Is it true that St. George was once a hub for cotton production?

A: Yes, and that history is more fascinating than most visitors expect. In the 1860s, Brigham Young sent settlers to the area specifically to grow cotton, earning the region the nickname "Utah's Dixie." The warm climate made it one of the few places in the territory where cotton could thrive, and the effort was intended to make the Mormon settlements self-sufficient during the Civil War era when Southern cotton supplies were disrupted.

Q: What draws so many retirees to St. George specifically, beyond just the sunshine?

A: Beyond the roughly 300 sunny days per year, the city offers an unusually dense network of paved and natural surface trails for cycling, walking, and pickleball — a sport that has genuinely exploded there. The cost of living remains lower than comparable Sun Belt retirement destinations, and the proximity to five national parks within a few hours' drive gives active retirees a constantly refreshed outdoor playground.

Tip of The Day

Beat the St. George Heat by Hiking in Reverse Order

Most visitors to St. George tackle trailheads like Snow Canyon or Zion's nearby routes starting at dawn, but here's a sharper move: scout your trail the evening before, note the canyon walls that cast the longest afternoon shadow, then begin your hike in the late afternoon heading into those shaded sections first. As the sun drops behind the red rock formations, temperatures can fall 15–20 degrees within an hour, turning what would be a brutal midday slog into a genuinely comfortable walk with bonus golden-hour lighting on the sandstone.

Pair this with carrying a small spray bottle of water — mist your forearms and the back of your neck rather than drinking the extra water, since evaporation in St. George's dry desert air cools skin almost instantly. It's a trick long-time Southern Utah locals use to stretch comfortable outdoor time well past what tourists think is possible in the summer months.

Secret Little Hack

Beat the St. George Heat by Timing the Red Cliffs Loop Like a Local

Most visitors to St. George assume the famous red rock trails are best tackled at sunrise, but longtime locals know a counterintuitive trick: the last 90 minutes before sunset on the Red Cliffs trail system is actually the sweet spot. The sandstone formations face west-northwest, meaning they shift into shadow earlier than you'd expect while the sky behind you turns a deep amber — the colors in the rock almost glow from reflected light rather than direct sun, making photos look professionally filtered without any editing.

The real insider move is parking at the less-obvious north trailhead off Old Highway 91 rather than the crowded main lot. You'll skip the afternoon bottleneck entirely, get the trail nearly to yourself, and loop back just as the temperature drops a full 10 to 15 degrees in under an hour — a phenomenon locals call the canyon exhale, where cooler air rolls down from the Pine Valley Mountains and funnels right through the wash. Timing it right means you get the scenery, the solitude, and a built-in natural air conditioner all in one shot.
